Many people say "Hey, I'd love to attend Barcamp, but I don't know what I'd talk about!" Rest assured that most everyone has this problem with their first Barcamp, and that is why we've created this page.

Listed below are ideas for topics to present about. This list is by no means exhaustive, but it should give you an idea of what people will be interested in, and provide some scope for the range of topics we fully anticipate will be present at Barcamp Tacoma.

  • Technology and politics (transparency in government using social media, etc)
  • Your latest DIY project at home
  • Physical computing (examples: Arduino, Lego Mindstorm)
  • Transportation analysis and solutions
  • Any topic in social media
  • Smart grid or technology and the environment (smart meters, power monitoring software, etc)
  • Effective marketing with technology
  • Cool personal projects (writing a new Twitter app?)
  • Work projects (if you can disclose)
  • Web development and design (layout, SEO, terrible designs, etc)
  • Topics in Computer Security (XSS, encryption, reverse engineering, etc)
  • Entrepreneurship (starting a tech company you want to gush about?)
  • Topics in software engineering (design patterns, software architecture)
  • Distributed/parallel systems (multicore programming, writing parallel algorithms)
  • Operating systems technologies
  • User interfaces and user experience
  • Geek culture (whatever you want! Geek style, games, integrating technology and life...!)
  • Bio or medical informatics (gene sequencing, cyborgs...)
  • Anything else you can think of!

Really, there are no limits. You don't have to give a full lecture, and you don't have to take up a full 30 minutes. Just come prepared to share information, whatever it is you want to contribute :)

Just remember: at Barcamp, if you play, you win :)
